When You Can’t Change Others: Finding True Peace This Christmas

Reflections on Relationships

The holiday season is here. Does it make you happy or sad, or perhaps a little bit of both?

I wonder how many of us struggle with relationships during this time. How many times have we been hurt by rude comments, a cold shoulder, or even a mean look?

I have often wondered how some people can behave the way they do. I am sure you have wondered the same at some point in your life. How can they say certain things or act in ways that feel so hurtful? We think of all the things we wish we had said, or hope to say, believing it might change them. We hope that finally they would understand who we are and change for the better.

We often think that others should take care of their own hearts before judging ours.

“And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?”
(Matthew 7:3, NKJV)

This verse reminds us that we cannot control or fix other people. Trying to change others only brings frustration and disappointment.

Bless, Pray, and Let Go

I came to understand something freeing. We cannot change other people, their behavior, or what they say. The only thing we can truly change is how we respond.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
(Psalm 46:10, NKJV)

We can choose to bless others, pray for them, and leave the rest in God’s hands.

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
(Romans 12:14, NKJV)

When we focus on God instead of trying to control others, we can find true peace.

The Greatest Gift and True Peace

As Christmas approaches, let us remember the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, who came into the world so that:

“Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
(John 3:16, NKJV)

Do not allow yourself to be overly hurt or bothered by things you cannot control. When you accept this truth, you will find peace. True peace comes only from Him.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:7, NKJV)

Do not store up treasures that fade on this earth. Instead, fix your heart and mind on the eternal treasures of heaven. Keep your eyes on Jesus, entrust Him with all your worries and struggles, and do not let the actions or opinions of others weigh you down. He is faithful to guard and protect you.

At the same time, we have a responsibility to care for our own hearts and minds by filling them with Scripture. This daily renewal strengthens us, fills us with joy, and allows us to live freely in Him.

I wish you all the blessings of this season as we remember our Lord and Savior. May your heart be filled with peace, hope, and joy this Christmas.

With love,
Ivana
